The Islanders got their first hit of the season Week 2. They also got their first extra base hit, first hit with a runner in scoring position, first home run, and first win - which just so happened to be their first come from behind win. And, yes, they kept track and celebrated all of these. Obviously, the pirate's offense finally found a gear, and kicked in to the tune of 10 hits on the day. Gendron and Linebrink supplied the big flies and 4 of the day's 8 RBI, but the team AVG as a whole climbed over 100 points.

On the other hand, the See Yas offense took as a step back; as is wont to happen when facing a Bischoff over 9 innings. Farkas and Bayley scattered 4 hits on the day, with the threats limited to really just two innings: one successful in the first game, the other coming up short in the second. Their pitching, however, took the step forward with those two pitching in tandem for the first time. Farkas is Farkas and threw a 6-inning, 17 K shut out to bring his ERA down to 0.50 on the season. Bayley went blow for blow with Evan Bischoff for five scoreless innings before surrendering 1 run in the 6th, while striking out 18. This 1-2 rotation shows potential to become one of the best. Jumping right into this week's double-header will quickly test whether or not that can be a reality.

The Wolfpack find themselves in last place by tie-breakers with a -17 run differential. Almost that entire chunk (and 60% of their runs allowed this year) can be accounted for in last week's 15-0, two-inning mercy loss. The number-two spot in their rotation has combined for a 27.00 ERA and 5.75 WHIP over just 4 IP. They need someone to step up in this role, or they could quickly find themselves in a deep, early hole. The good news for the 'Pack is that, just as he did last year, Strojny bounced back after an 0-2 Opening Day with another great pitching performance. He no-hit a good Squirrels lineup on the way to the Wolves' first win of the season, striking out 15 in the process. He also popped off his second home run of 2016: this one of the grand-slam variety. The 'Pack offense has been dependent on the home run, plating 7 of their 8 runs this season via the long ball.

Gendron also had a very nice bounce back performance on the mound for the Islanders. He gave up just 2 runs last week on one mistake pitch, which found the street behind the left field fence. Outside of that his command was much better as he kept his team in the game for their first win. It looks like the Pirates will be without Gendron this week, but scheduled to fill his spot in timely fashion is Bruen, who will make his first start(s) of the season. Last year in a short season (9 IP) Bruen put up impressive numbers (0.67 ERA, 0.56 WHIP) with crafty, deceptive pitching. His appearance for the Islanders was a little jolt on their run to the playoffs. Could his 2016 debut now provide the same spark for a 1-3 clubhouse?

The brothers Brannan once called this field home, back in 2013 when it was called "The Field of Make Believe" and they played for King Friday. That's just a factoid, because by the time you get to the third series you've already touched on most of the points to be made for the teams. Plus, there are so many moving parts before we even get this far. These two teams do have some common ground already on this season, though, in having tilted against the Squirrels.

First takeaway, both teams defeated a perennial Clown Shu candidate, Skinner, and did it in a big way with the bats. The Wolfpack put up 5 runs against Skinner in 2 innings on 2 hits. The big one being the grand slam mentioned above. The See Yas carved out 7 hits versus Craig, 2 of them home runs, to post 3 runs in their W. The second games also share half of the same story: both fell behind early with their number-two arms on the mound. While the See Yas were able to mount a shocking 9-run comeback to get the second W, the Wolves were never able get anything going in their loss. The takeaway? I don't know... Both teams can lay into good pitching, but then get sloppy with the bats at other times? Sure. Seems possible, I guess, given the small sample size. Maybe.

The key facts to keep in mind at this point in the season are these: A better than .500 day for the Wolfpack plops them right back in the thick of things; a sub-.500 day for the Wolfpack drops them into dangerous territory. A sub-.500 day for the See Yas reins them back in. A better than .500 day for the See Yas helps them run away and hide.
