At 7th in team OPS El Diablos and Holy Balls play identical schedules this week. This is as close to head-to-head as we'll see the 2 teams down the stretch as they chase the Garcia Pennant. They tied their season series 2-2. The Fighting Chickens have a 7 point lead, but they've played 4 more games and are just 0.5 games up. After Sunday, El Diablos only have 1 series left to play. 3-6-1 in their last 10 games has been the roughest stretch of the season for El Diablos, and is not the wave you want to be riding into an important weekend. Measured against the Balls: winning 1 more of these 4 games will be key to helping El Diablos sleep during July. The first obstacle on that path are the Flying Squirrels. The Flying Squirrels have one head-to-head record this season that is over .500, and that is against El Diablos. Outside of 1 rough series against the Isles a few weeks back, the Squirrels have split every other series on the season. With a pitching rotation of Skinner and Brandon D'Agnese it's easy to see why they don't lose series; yet, it's strange to see they aren't winning more. A lot of that may have to do with bad calls their offense. The Squirrels are 7th across the board in team AVG, SLG%, and OPS - and even that is puzzling with bats like the D'Agnese brothers, Dylan Braden, and Brown in the lineup. So, we've answered a riddle with a mystery. Still, the Squirrels are in good position to make the playoffs. They currently sit in 4th place, in line for the play-in game, a similar result to last season... as well as every season the Squirrels have ever played: 4th in 2011, 4th in 2012, 5th in 2014. This same fate is not set in stone, though, as the the Cox or Aces are not out of their reach. Playing up for a 3 or 4 win day is required to get back in that discussion, though.

An up and down season continues for the Balls. Their longest winning streak is 3 games. Longest losing streak is the same. Over their last 2 weeks of play the Balls are 2-3-1, which has dropped them below .500. Although, they still find themselves in the playoffs. More good news: the 2 wins in that stretch came against their first opponents this week. Their pitching worries have been exacerbated by the 12 RA by Castle in his last 2 starts, though. They've tried to answer this with a trade for Fisher earlier this week, but his appearance Sunday is questionable. Speaking of trades: Doby and Giguere have been a shot in the arm for the Isles. Doby's only been with the team for less than a month, but his 11 RBI in Islanders' whites already puts him second on the roster. Giguere's was picked up a week later, and in 6 games with the team he's also climbed to second in the lineup with 18 TB and 3 HR. Change of scenery's been good for all the black-and-white, but sitting a game behind the Balls in the Wild Card hunt (and both with 6 games remaining after this week), the Isles need to avoid a repeat of the first set in this season series.

These 2 split their season series earlier this year. However, the Islanders no longer have Fisher on their roster and he was responsible - with both his arm and bat - for their win. That was a 1-0 pitchers' duel between Fisher and Farkas. El Diablos win came via a huge 10-run comeback after spotting the Isles a 7-run lead early. Can the Isles hold a lead? Will they try to play the matchups? Are Phillips and El Diablos' bats just too much?

Another 1-1 split season series, and again featuring a pitchers' duel and an offensive bonanza. The duel in this case, between Castle and Skinner, could have gone either way - and maybe should have gone the other way, if not for a call made in the field. Balls took the win in extras. Then the Squirrels struck back and put up 13 runs and 5 HR on the way to a blowout in the second game. Big questions: Do the Squirrels still hold a grudge? Can the Balls sort out their pitching? Who will hit the longest bomb?

The Wolfpack have been playing over .500 ball in their last ten games. That push has them nipping at the heels of the Wild Card, and only 1.5 games out of the Garcia lead. Strojny has an impressive 0.67 WHIP over that stretch, and Greg Brannan is slugging a cool .836 over the past 10 games is to lead the Pack. Meanwhile, it's desperation time for the See Yas as they sit 2 games back in the Wild Card, chasing the Holy Balls and this week's opponent, the Wolfpack. They need to win this series to have any shot at hanging around the race. Farkas threw a PG this year vs. the Pack, but who can pitch Game 9?
