Top 10 Hitters through May

We're about to come back from our first holiday break, and with most teams a quarter or third of the way through their seasons it's a perfect time to measure up where players sit so far. We already broke down the top-ten pitchers through the first four weeks, so now let's look on the other side of the ball at the top ten hitters. Similarly to how things were done with the pitchers, we'll first rank them 1-10 (and beyond) in a number of individual stat categories:
    The Old School Categories
  • Batting Average: The tried and true, most basic offensive baseball stat.
  • Slugging Percentage: Average on steroids, slugging is better representation of power and production.
  • On-Base Percentage: Walks are boring, but a lot of people like them. Here ya go.

  • The More Obscure Categories
  • Plate Appearances per RBI: How frequently will this player produce a run?
  • At Bats per Home Run: How frequently will this player clear the bases?
  • Bases per Hit: Similar to slugging, using Total Bases, but only focused on hit quality when something happens.
Once we can see where the players stack up in the individual categories, we'll then take the average of all six categories to compute their overall "Composite Rank." That number is then used for a final ranking across the entire offensive spectrum: Closer the composite rank is to 1, the better the player.
